Competition is present as much in single-player games (which require that a player improve his or her performance
from match to match) as in team games (which require that one team wins the game). In single player games, conflict
takes the form of a confrontation between the player and luck (for example, solitare, crap games, and roulette) or
between oneself and another player, who may be a computer using a decision algorithm. Finally, a challenge occurs
when player action provokes an opponent’s reaction, thus creating a competition or a struggle (Kirriemur et
McFarlane, 2004).
