Subsequent studies should analyze whether the observed
microstructural changes occur proportionately and gradually with
water temperature. For this purpose, high-resolution crystallographic
mapping methods such as electron backscattered diffraction
(EBSD) could be used to map changes in crystallographic
axes. If a relationship between temperature and crystallographic
data can be verified, quantitative reconstructions of past water
temperature may become possible. Further, it is mandatory to test
whether other environmental variables also affect the microstructure
of this species, and whether these different environmental
controls can be distinguished based on the analysis of microstructures.
It is also necessary to verify whether similar microstructural
changes occur under natural conditions
