Water stress is one of the most important environmental constraints that limit plant productivity. Plant productivity is determined by a complex series of events leading from CO2 fixation in the chloroplasts, formation of phloem-mobile and storage metabolites, and delivery of these metabolites to sink tissue. This partioning of carbon determines plant health and vigor during times of stress and subsequently leads to good or bad harvests.
