In this theoretical paper we perform a critical epistemological analysis of the methodology of innovation research. We aim to contribute to the foundations of innovation research from a philosophical perspective. Innovation research as a field is today dominated by methods from social science and management. Examples include analyses based on interviews on the one hand and on micro- or macroeconomic statistical data on the other as well as analyses of innovation management practices. While it is clear that there is a tight coupling of innovation management with social aspects, it is also evident that innovation is closely related to technology. It is argued that this relation deserves more attention to develop a sound epistemological basis of innovation management research.
