Once they arrive to Tokyo, Hachi immediately runs into the arms of her boyfriend, while Nana not waiting turns around and walks into the crowd without saying a word. As much as this disappoints Hachi, it’s too late to do anything and she continues her life with her boyfriend.
The next time we see Nana is when Hachi finds an apartment which “calls out to her country side” because of its width and green surroundings. It’s an old building with no elevators, but the rent is cheap. When she enters the apartment, she falls in love with it, especially after knowing it is apartment 707 (Nana is 7 in Japanese). However, just before she accepts it, we see Nana coming out of one of the rooms with her real estate agent, apparently there first and therefore the ones with the first decision. Although they squabble a little to who gets the apartment, after Hachi admits that her relationship will be in trouble if she cannot prove she can live alone independently, Nana accepts to share the house with her seeing as there were two bedrooms separated by the wide living/dining room. And this is how the friendship between Nana and Hachi really begins.
Nana and Hachi start the process of bringing their apartment together to a livable place, by shopping for furniture and beds and other appliances for the house. At a dollar store, Hachi comes across glasses to use which had strawberries on them. As dramatic as this is, these two glasses actually signify the friendship between these two girls. It is also at this time that Nana gives Hachi her nickname. As I said, Nana is 7 and as they kept confusing each other with the whole Nana and Nana business, Nana decided to call the other Nana Hachi (which means 8 in Japanese). In addition, Hachi is a pet name give usually to dogs, as Nana thought Hachi reminded her of an eager puppy. In fact, as we get introduced to the rest of the characters, we see that they all immediately pick up the term Hachi, and we always see her wagging her tail whenever she is excited. (This is a little off topic but I thought it was really funny – while we don’t see this happening in the anime, in the manga whenever Ren (who we will talk about later on) calls Hachi or vice versa, and she’s too loud or excited, he sees a puppy in front of him and he shouts “STOP BARKING!” on the phone. It’s so cute…)
Their house starts becoming a great place, especially after Nana builds (yes builds) a dining table next to the window, in what becomes the iconic picture of Apartment 707.
