In recent years Southeast Asia, especially ASEAN, has been at the center of land grabbing debates following a series of illegal acquisition of land in the region. There have been reports on international companies in the United States, Europe and Asia (China and Singapore) leasing land from Southeast Asian governments to produce raw materials, such as sugar cane. Other countries faced with the threat of food insecurity resort to producing their goods in foreign land. However, in exchange, local farmers and their families lose their livelihood and are sometimes even displaced. Worse, they are inadequately compensated for their loss.
