In order to develop sustainable harvesting of Soga for both
the thatch and palm heart industries, there is a need to
advocate for the recognition of Soga as a forest product
whose harvesting is then subject to management by the
Forestry Department. As previously mentioned, sustainable
harvesting guidelines have been prepared, translated into
Fijian and widely distributed as the best practices for the
industry as well as a means to ensure compliance (NFMV
2008d).
