the aperture observed in the exosporium would almost certainly
allow entry of larger molecules into the exosporium and therefore
its role as a protective barrier, at least with regards to this strain, is
limited. A number of proteins have been identified in the exosporium
that have been implicated in spore germination (Terry et al.,
2011). Following germination the developing cell was previously
reported to exit the exosporium prior to elongation and cell division
(Steichen et al., 2007).
