What are some rules of hotel interior design that an individual guy can carry over to his own apartment?
Michael Achenbaum: One is comfort. As much as someone might want all-black couches and three-legged stools, you really should focus on comfort for guests. At the end of the day, you have to actually live in it, whether it’s temporary in a hotel room or permanent for your own home. Also, don’t do so many things that are almost overwhelming details. You only need two or three things to catch someone’s eye in a room. Everything else should work with those details. For example, you walk into our front lobby and you see the dramatic chandeliers and you have the unique front desk and the fireplace. You don’t need a lot of other mega-details within the space.
What do you consider to be the crucial elements of a comfortable, well-designed room?
