Abstract
Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) organization has planned to develop
sustainable tourism in term of “Low Carbon Tourism,” in order to cope with climate change regime. As a
result, electricity generation project by means of biking activity within Sukhothai historical park are initiated.
The activity aims to store electricity for lighting at night around the monastery areas or pedestrian routes.
Furthermore, the project will potentially benefit in sustainable tourism development and promote tourists’
engagement and relationship during their visit at Sukhothai historical park. Besides, it is the campaign for
biking for sightseeing in the park area that can reduce the amount of vehicle usage, which is considered as
hazardous for the environment and unsafe for other tourists. By converting mechanical energy from tourist
biking into electricity for using within the park, energy conservation policy could be sufficiently implemented
by tourist themselves and surrounded community. Therefore, it can be used as the model for raising the
awareness of conscious energy usage for the public. From the principle mentioned, the bicycle prototype
was built and developed to generate electricity and store in small batteries. Then, it was used as the energy
source for LED lamps. The prototype building concepts consisted of designing the bike concept, prototype
fabricating, and testing the functionality of the prototype. The batteries charge/discharge components along
with the lamp was also constructed to suit for touring activity and promote its value to the public. The primary
test of the prototype was purposely conducted. The results showed that by cycling at the speed of 10- 15 km/
hr, with the total distance of 5-7 km, the amount of electricity that could be harnessed is approximately 8
watt.hr by employing 2 battery cells with 1500 mAhr capacity. By harnessing electricity from 5 bicycles as the
energy source, a LED lamp could be provided as the lighting source throughout the night.
