Types of Questions
I Information Questions
1. “Information” questions are also called “wh” questions
because it uses words which begin with “wh” to ask information.
Wh words:
Who – Whom – Whose – What – Which – What kind of When – Where – Why – How –
How much – How many - How often – How far
Example: What country are you from?
Where do you live?
2. Choice Questions “Choice” questions are statements compel listener to make a choice.
Example: “Would you like coffee or tea?
“What color do you like green or blue?”
II Yes or No Questions
1. Yes or no questions are simple question where expected answer Yes or no, if possible. This questions always begin with helping verb or modals.
Helping Verbs: “Do” (do, does, did) for “action questions”
“Be” (Is, are, am, Was, were) “ for non action questions”
“Have” Has, Had, etc) for perfect tenses questions.
Modals Verbs:
Will – would – be going to – May – Might – Can – could – Be able to
Shall – should – Ought to – Must – Have/got to
Had better – had – best – Be supposed to – used to
Example: Do you enjoy living in Thailand?
Will you come to school tomorrow?
2. Restatements Questions. “Restatement” questions are actually statement usually spoken
with a rising tone. Confirmation on the correctness of the statement.
Example “Samut Prakarn is going to have a sky train.”
“Samut Prakarn is going to have a sky train?”
3. Negative Questions “Negative” questions are similar to yes or no spoken with a rising tone but not word is added to remind, persuade, to criticize or to suggest.
Example “Don’t you have money for lunch?”
“Can’t we go to the canteen if we are hungry?”
4. Tag Questions “Tag” questions are statements followed by a short question “tag” to confirm its correctness
Example You study in Sriwattana College. Don’t you?

“You didn’t go to school today. Did you?”

5. Indirect Question “Indirect” questions are polite statements made to show the need for information or assistance.
Example: “I wonder if you could help me move this chairs?
“I need to know how much you weigh?”
