The third study (Griffin, Pettersson, Semali & Takakuwa,1995) was performed on subjects in four different countries,
each country with its own distinct culture. The methods and results paralleled those of the 1993 Griffin and Gibbs study.
The evidence of American culture was evident in the responses in other countries, particularly in Japan regarding computer-related symbols, but the overwhelming evidence was in favor of cultural differences being the predominant
variable when symbol understanding was measured. An international symbol system based on intuitive interpretation
of symbol meanings may not be possible until the world shares a common culture.
