In cases where trauma victims are pregnant, the obstetric, emergency, and trauma teams work cooperatively to enhance a speedy management and early intervention. These efforts to combine knowledge of obstetrics with trauma management results in a more favorable outcome for both mother and infant. Whether the patient is cared for in the emergency department, on the trauma unit, or the obstetric unit, the key to success is organized resuscitation, diagnosis and treatment of injuries, and recognition and intervention of maternal or fetal compromise if the pregnancy is threatened by the injury. Sharing specialty knowledge and expertise ensures the highest potential for a positive outcome.
