EFB has a lower heating value than wood and coal due to the higher contents of moisture and oxygen, but the high volatile matter content compensates for this disadvantage by boosting the reactivity of the EFB. Nevertheless, high potassium content causes ash-related problems in the gasification system at high temperatures. Three decomposition stages were observed during the thermal degradation of EFB. Assuming three independent parallel reactions, the least-squares estimation method for a first-order reaction model was successfully applied to describe the EFB gasification, which showed a good fit with experimental data.
