Need for Screening Initiation
Screening during routine patient visits allows the provider to detect hearing impairments early and protects patients from the negative consequences of untreated hearing loss. Because patients are unlikely to initiate a discussion about their hearing difficulties, it is essential that the provider assume this responsibility. Numerous studies have illustrated the dramatic influence PCPs can have on patient beliefs.27 Popp and Hackett27 reported that 63% of patients said that their PCP is their most valued resource for information regarding hearing health and treatment. Additionally, studies performed by Kochkin17 showed that patients listen to their providers and can be adequately motivated by their primary care provider's encouragement regarding hearing evaluation and treatment. Patients can be as much as 8 times more motivated to try a hearing aid if their provider has recommended one
