Extrapyramidal symptoms were monitored at each scheduled visit
by means of the Simpson–Angus Scale and the Barnes Rating Scale.
The results showed that the mean changes of Simpson–Angus scores
from baseline were 0.4 ± 0.1 and 0.4 ± 0.2 in the aripiprazole and risperidone
groups, respectively (Fig. 3). The mean changes of Barnes Rating
Scale scores were 0.8 ± 1.2 and 0.4 ± 1.0, respectively (Fig. 3). There
were no statistically significant differences in either the Simpson–Angus
scores or Barnes Rating Scale scores mean changes. Akathisia occurred
in 32 subjects (23%) in the aripiprazole group and 31 subjects (22%) in
the risperidone group. There were no significant differences in the incidence
of akathisia between the two groups (p = 0.753). In addition, for
the mean changes of both scores, no significant differences between the
aripiprazole group and risperidone group were found from week 1 to
the end of the study (Fig. 3).
