In this article, I begin by defining English as a Lingua Franca (henceforth ELF) and
explaining its ideological differences from English as a Foreign Language (henceforth
EFL). Focusing on the Asian Expanding Circle, I go on to describe some of the
features that have been identified as possible features of ELF, along with some of the
skills that its proficient speakers demonstrate, in particular, the ability to code-switch
and accommodate appropriately in context. I then discuss responses to the notion of
ELF, and comment on the implications of ELF research findings for speakers of nonnative,
nativised and native Englishes.
