Unwritten rules reflect a culture's interpretation of its surroundings. A foreign columnist for the Englishlanguage
Bangkok Post once proclaimed that the unwritten traffic rule in Thailand is: "When there are more than
three cars in front of you at a stop sign or intersection, start your own line!" This contravenes the Western stayin-line
ethic, of course, but it effectively portrays, albeit in slightly exaggerated fashion, a fairly consistent form of
behavior at intersections in Thailand. And it drives non-Thais crazy!(l4)
