General Considerations Regarding Vitamin D Treatment While this review summarizes data on vitamin D and diabetes,
it is also important to have some general knowledge on the clinical use of vitamin D. We therefore aim to provide
a short overview. In order to prevent rickets, there exists a general recommendation to supplement vitamin D (usually
400 IU per day) in the first year(s) of life [93]. In adults, vitamin D is generally recommended for the treatment of
osteomalacia and of osteoporosis. In this context, it has been shown that a daily vitamin D supplementation of 800 to
2000 IU per day reduces fractures significantly [94]
