Environmental management – Waste Management and disposal methods
Wastes are defined as a substance or object arising from human/residential areas or anima activities that have to be discarded as useless or unwanted. Today the world has come a long way from dumping trash in holes to adopting high tech ways of disposal. Different waste management and disposal methods and strategies are followed depending upon the nature volume of waste . Each type of waste has to be disposed according to its constituents and reusability ,consistency and toxicity.
Wastes are classified as solid liquid or sludge on their consistency as hazardous or non-hazardous basis, whether or not they have properties such as ignitability, reactivity and leachable toxic component or are biohazards.
Methods of Effective Waste Management
Sanitary land fills
It involves disposing municipal solid waste by compacting it and then covering it with soil. Land fills should have well-engineered facilities that are well-located designed, operated monitored, closed, cared for after closure and cleaned up when necessary. Wastes disposed of in a land fill can be secured against the leaching of undesirable chemicals into ground water by solidifying them with materials such as cement, fly ash from power plants, asphalt or organic polymers.
