The reason for using both RGB and CIELab systems is that each has specific advantages when considering the conversion from Munsell colour descriptors to a Cartesian colour coordinate system. RGB is most commonly used in computer graphics and therefore can be easily displayed on-screen without further conversion. However, as stated above RGB does not cover the full range of Munsell colours, which CIELab does. However, CIELab is not so easy to display directly as graphics, and requires further conversion to RGB first. Our intention here was to determine which colour scheme provided the best predictive results, which would inform future decisions when converting from Munsell to
a Cartesian colour system. If RGB gives equal or better results than CIELab, then due to relative ease in displaying on-screen, it would be more appropriate to use this system.
