located in takasaki gunma, ‘small house h’ is a private residence designed
by japanese architect kumiko inui. the one-storey house, constructed out
of concrete and wood, features a square plan subdivided into four triangular
rooms. the layout enables each quadrant space equal amount of window area
by designating a full face of the structure to every room.
from the exterior, the house assumes a simple, classic shape with a centrally
pitched roof line which contrasts with the unconventional layout of the interior.
the bearings of each room are further disoriented by the hollow roof, which results
in not a flat ceiling but a volumetric enclosure. the gravity of the space rests on
the backdrop of the natural site, which the house takes advantage of with full,
floor to ceiling glazing in each room. slideable doors further blur the boundary
between indoor/outdoor.
