Lesson VOC 52
Task: Turn a stove burner on and off.
Prerequisites: COG 6, SEN 13, VOC 5
Concept: This task carries obvious safety issues. For this reason, the student must have mastered following a supervisor's instructions (VOC 5). Skills in this particular area later serve as a prerequisite to other cooking tasks. Equipment selection should depend on actual or perceived potential employment opportunities.
Behavioral Objective: When requested by a "supervisor," the student will turn on a stove burner; set it to "high," "medium," or "low" as directed; and then turn the burner off as directed, to a 100% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A stove of the type perceived to be of actual or potential use in an employment setting and some blue, yellow, and red stickers.
Task Analysis:
1. Discuss or otherwise communicate with the student the safety issues related to this activity. Do not proceed if it appears that the student will perform this task when not supervised.
2. Providing physical guidance, assist the student in the action needed to turn on the stove burner. Also use verbal direction as this process takes place.
3. Place a blue sticker by the low setting, a yellow sticker by the medium setting and a red sticker by the high setting. Physically guide the student in adjusting the knob to each setting, providing verbal commands as well.
4. Turn the stovetop on and physically guide the student in turning it off when verbally requested.
5. Combine the concepts of Steps 2 though 4, randomly requesting different temperature settings (low, medium, or high) into one physically guided action, concluding with the prompt to turn the stove burner of
6. Continue Step 5, reducing physical guidance until only verbal requests are needed. Maintain supervision throughout any interaction related to this activity. The stickers can remain or be removed, depending on the
