What do we un-
derstand by this concept of beauty? Where does our sense of beauty come
form, and what is its significance in our understanding of aesthetic signifi-
cance in the arts? Wittgenstein describes the word "beautiful" as an inter-
jection, without much intrinsic sense,8 in other words a statement about my
response to an experience, rather like "hooray." It is made, he suggests,
when the artist "gets it right," and he then goes on to try to identify what
getting it right means. For Wittgenstein aesthetic endeavor is a process of
using rules that are established within a particular culture or tradition. We
are schooled in the use and recognition of these rules within the context of
different kinds of artistic activity
