The Effect of Scenario based Learning on English Language
Teaching and Learning

Language teaching has always been a phenomenon all over the world since middle ages with the
teaching of Greek and Latin. The teaching and learning process started with the Grammar Translation
Method. There have been lots of approaches, methods and techniques to make the learning and
teaching of English more effective and communicative. One of these is scenario-based learning.
Scenario based learning is learning based on situations or context. Scenario based learning is also
based on situated cognition and this means that learning happens in a defined context. Giving real life
situations to the students make sense in terms of making the learning process effective and durable. It
begins to use by many teachers in education especially in language teaching and it is preferred thanks
to its meaningfulness. This article focuses on the effects of scenario based learning on English
language teaching and learning. In this article, additionally, the main characteristics of scenario based
learning are given in terms of English language teaching. An experiment has been carried out on
English teachers using this in their classes. At the end of the article, effects and
advantages/disadvantages of scenario based learning in English language teaching are given
generally.
