The junta will defer deciding on the fate of the previous government's high-speed rail project until a viability study on the controversial scheme is completed in three months.
The study will recommend whether to continue the 800-billion-baht project involving four railway routes — from Bangkok to Phitsanulok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Hua Hin and Rayong.
Transport permanent secretary Somchai Siriwattanachoke said the high-speed rail plans have not been shelved, but are being treated as "non-urgent".
