Skimming and Scanning are two specific speed reading techniques. These techniques are similar in process but different in purpose. Skimming is a method of rapidly moving the eyes over text with the purpose of getting only the main ideas and the general overview of the content, and Scanning is scanning rapidly covers a great deal of material in order to locate a specific fact or piece of information. According to Grellet (2008) both skimming and scanning are specific reading techniques necessary for quick and efficient reading. When skimming and scanning, one goes through the reading material quickly in order to get the text of it, to know how it is organized, or to get an idea of the tone or intention of the writer.
