The excellent survival and growth rates of oysters in this closed system demonstrate that
oysters can be potentially cultured in recirculating systems using synthetically derived
seawater and live feeds. It should be noted that recirculating aquaculture systems present
inherent advantages and disadvantages to the health of oysters similar to other aquatic organisms produced in closed systems. These systems generally allow for better monitoring and control of environmental and water quality issues, however, the concentration of organics and
potentially toxic waste products can negatively affect the growth of these organisms or
pose a health oncern for oysters intended to be consumed raw and unprocessed
