Later, not only the royal family but also the Thai government felt the importance of English for the global economy and for establishing Thai modernity; therefore, the need for more Thais to know English increased with more contacts with western countries (Rappa & Wee, 2006). Consequently, in 1913, English became part of the Thai educational curriculum (Kachru & Nelson, 2011); as a result, it became the first foreign language subject in the Thai educational system.
