At the Tabard Inn
A Pilgrims go to a place because they want to please God. Their journey-a pilgrimage-is often to a place where a saint once lived or died.
Thomas a’ Becket was a saint-a very good servant of God. He was killed in Canterbury Cathedral, the great old church in Canterbury. Very many pilgrims went to Canterbury to visit the Cathedral.
Chaucer wrote a book about six hundred years ago. It told the story of some pilgrims who went to the Canterbury together. On the journey from London, they each told a story-a tale.
B The pilgrims met at a house called the Tabard Inn in London. The host-the innkeeper-was a fat man. He was very happy and full of good stories which made them laugh. The pilgrims had a very good meal with a lot of good food and drink.
After the meal, the Host stood up and said, “I am very pleased to meet you. I have never met such a happy company. We are all going to Canterbury. It is a long way, and you need something to keep you happy on the journey. I will ask you to do something. Each of you must tell a story on the way. We shall give a very good dinner to the pilgrim who tells the best story. Will you do that? Hold up your hands if you will do it.”
The pilgrims all held up their hands. They cried, “Yes! Yes! We will do that. And we will make the Host our leader. He will tell us which story is best.
C The Host made all the pilgrims get up very early next morning. They started on their journey. When they stopped to give their horses water, the Host said, “You remember what we said last night about telling stories.”
“Yes,” they said. “Who will tell the first story?”
Knights were gentlemen who fought for the king. This knight had just come back from the war. He was going to Canterbury to give thanks to God because he had come back safe and unhurt.
