Most people are exposed to a small amount of benzene on a daily basis. People can be exposed to benzene in the environment and in the workspace. The exposure of the general population to benzene is mainly through breathing contaminated air. Fumes from benzene-containing products such as glues, paints, furniture wax and detergents can also be a source of exposure. The major sources of benzene exposure are automobile service stations and exhaust, industrial emissions and tobacco smoke (Evans, 2000). Benzene mainly comes from exhaust and evaporative emissions out of moving sources like vehicles, etc., as can be inferred from the fact that benzene concentration in microenvironments far from traffic is lower than that of the RAMA (Ortiz, 2000).
