That afternoon Clare made some enquiries about Ulrich Grunwalder and discovered he was still alive, in good health and still to be seen wandering around the old part of Zermatt most afternoons. She also learnt that he could speak some English probably as a result of taking English people climbing, she thought. So she decided that she too would wander around Zermatt that afternoon, in the hope of seeing him. There couldn't be many ninety-four-year olds still out and about, so surely she would be able to identify him.
