1. Introduction
According to the last Spanish General Union of Workers‘ (Unión General de Trabajadores, UGT) report, based on official figures, on average every day two people die in Spain due
to work related accidents; seventeen people suffer a serious accident and 1752 sustain a minor injury during working hours. This situation was even worse in the past. As shown in UGT‘s report, in the last decade there has been a substantial reduction in work related
injury rate. Being defined as the number of accidents for every 100,000 workers, it has
fallen from 7.558,4 in 2000 to 3.971,4 in 2010. Nevertheless, according to data from Eurostat, despite the significant improvements achieved, Spain is still one of the countries with the highest work related accident rate in the UE.
