Specifications (requirements and limitations)
In order to control and monitor processes, inputs and outputs,
the Blood Service must understand what the requirements
and limitations for each are. These are often defined

following examples:
• Donor selection criteria
• Time limits for processes, for example time taken for
completion of donation (determines type of component
that can be manufactured)
• Environmental control limits (temperature, humidity,
airflow)
• Component specifications (volume, residual cell counts,
etc.)
• Storage temperatures (materials, components)
• Handling and storage requirements (quarantine and segregation
of components, materials, etc.)
• Release and labelling requirements (mandatory testing
