Neuronal apoptosis is not restricted to the period of brain
development but is believed to also contribute to loss of
neurons occurring in acute and chronic neurologic diseases.
However, in the adult CNS a distinct set of pathogenic stimuli
rather than the lack of trophic support, predominate as
inducers of apoptosis.
