As also demonstrated by Lieten (1997), LD conditions can to
a large extent substitute for chilling even in fully dormant plants
(Figs. 6–8). Such LD substitution for chilling in dormancy
release is not unique in strawberry, but has also been
demonstrated in other perennial herbaceous plants such as
Sedum telephium and Oxyria digyna in which dormancy
induction and release are fully controlled by photoperiod alone
(Heide, 2001, 2005). As demonstrated by Vince-Prue and Buck
(1976), a high ratio of red to far-red radiation is required for this
LD response in strawberry.
