Ahead of the launch of the Android One platform in India, Economic Times has managed to obtain the pricing information for the handsets, which is claimed to be in the vicinity of Rs. 6,399 (or around $104). The pricing is slightly above the sub-$100 figure Google was targeting in the country.
It is unclear at this stage as to whether all three manufacturers that have signed up for the program – Micromax, Karbonn and Spice – will offer their handsets at Rs. 6,399, but that seems unlikely as pricing of Spice's Android One Dream Uno was listed on Flipkart for Rs. 6,999 ($114). It is entirely feasible that the Rs. 6,399 figure is the entry point for the Android One platform.
Google is all set to officially announce Android One in India later today, but it looks like there are additional announcements in store from the search giant, as Sundar Pichai has confirmed to Economic Times that there will be news announcements regarding Google Play Newsstand and YouTube. And it looks like India will not be the sole country where Android One devices are sold, with Google mulling an expansion to other South-East Asian countries including Indonesia and Phillippines by the end of the year, with more regions set to follow in 2015.
