The architecture of the traditional Khmer house, and the cultural and spiritual meaning of the home, therefore plays an important role at the centre of Khmer culture. However, with the more recent advent of modernization, urbanization and industrialization, there is a danger that the traditional Khmer house and home, born in antiquity, may pass away. These are the concerns that we take up in the following discussion as we look at both the architectural evolution of the house and the cultural evolution of the home. We examine how the ancient traditions of house building remain present or are reinterpreted in modern urban and peri-urban areas, even within the context of new and foreign influences introduced more recently. We particularly have in mind the increasing prevalence of Feng Shui beliefs derived from Chinese geomancy, which tend to identify positive or harmful influences present in a landscape or in an urban configuration.
