To raise awareness of the historical value of the Talad Noi neighbourhood, the Siam Society under Royal Patronage arranged a trip called “Sketching Talad Noi's Cultural Heritage” last Saturday.
The project involved about 50 artists, most from the Sketchers Club, touring the area. The artists studied their favourite spots and sketched them in vibrant styles and colours.
Pisit Apiratikul, 62, a club member, said sketching a corner of a community was a way to record its history. He said a group of people sketching a community can also become an attraction for tourists and RESIDENTS.
He said it takes only a few seconds to find a spot and snap a photo. "But sketching allows me to linger on the moment and to absorb the atmosphere a little longer," he said.
Sketching or drawing also helps him connect to a place and its people, he added.
Mr Pisit complained that many historical sites are hidden behind modern facilities. He cited the beautifully decorated Chow Sue Kong Shrine which once could be seen from the Chao Phraya River while travelling past the area. But the view is now hidden behind a large garage canopy located in front of the shrine.
