At the beginning and end of each trial, single macroalgae samples
(10 g wet weight) were rinsed with de-ionized water and blot-dried.
Dry weight was measured after oven-drying at 105 °C for 24 h. Dried
samples were ground with a mortar and pestle to a powder, homogenized,
and stored in a cool, dry place for analysis with a NCHS-O
Elemental analyzer (EA 1109, Fisons Instruments, San Carlos, California).
