In addition, sorghum, proso and foxtail millets are important sources of cereal fibre, which is associated with a lower risk of type 2 DM and improved insulin sensitivity. In addition, proteins from foxtail and proso millets improve cholesterol metabolism. Although these findings suggest that intake of cereal crops is helpful for managing DM, no scientific information on the link between cereal crops and the action of carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes is available. Here, we investigated the effect of 70% EtOH extracts from different cultivars of sorghum, foxtail millet and proso millet on the activity of a-glucosidase and a-amylase, both of which are targets of drugs currently used to treat type 2 DM, and suggest that sorghum can be a good source of anti-diabetic agents.
