Dry anaerobic digestions of cow dung, pig manure, and their mixtures were obtained stable.
The co-digestion of cow dung with pig manure provided 5.10–18.01 % extra biogas, 2.03–
12.95 % greater VS removal, and 2.98–12.52 % greater COD removal compared to the single
digestions of cow dung or pig manure. As the pig manure was partially inhibited by the
presence of higher amount of ammonia nitrogen, cow dung diluted the ammonia nitrogen, and
the ratio of 2:3 (cow dung to pig manure) achieved the highest methane yield and the greatest
organic material removal efficiency. In addition, a majority of the bacterial and archaeal
communities remained unchanged following the addition of nitrogen-rich pig manure as a
co-substrate while maintaining balanced dry co-digestion processes.
