0:00Welcome to the Sakai collaborative learning environment.
0:04In this screencast, we will login to the system, explore the user interface, identify the most
0:09commonly used tools, and review best practices for navigating the site.
0:22This is the Sakai portal page. It will be customized to include your institution's logo
0:26and color scheme. To login, enter your username and password
0:29in the boxes at the top of the screen.
0:29Your organization may utilize a "single sign-on," which enables the same account credentials
0:34to be used across many different systems, including Sakai.
0:38If you are unable to login to Sakai, contact your institution's helpdesk.
0:50When you login to Sakai for the first time, a brief tutorial is displayed as an orientation
0:55to the major features and layout of the software. You may skip the tutorial by clicking the
1:01red X.
1:05To re-run it at any time, click the user icon, and click "tutorial."
1:13The layout of controls and information is consistent throughout the entire Sakai experience.
1:17There are three main components to the interface.
1:19A list of sites available to you is found at the top of the window, in the "Navigation
1:24Menu." Note that the currently-selected site, My Workspace, is highlighted ...
1:28... the features and functions of each site are available in Sakai's "Tool Menu," found
1:35on the left side of the window ...
1:36... and finally, the content of the selected site is displayed in the central "Content
1:44Area." When you login to Sakai, you will always start
1:48in My Workspace. My Workspace is a private site that contains personalized content. This
1:54content is accessible only to yourself and others with whom you explicitly share it.
2:02The Message of the Day contains news and information from from your institution. Faculty and students
2:08should monitor this area for important updates about the system.
2:12My Workspace also contains "synoptic tools" that consolidate critical information from
2:18all of your Sakai course and project sites. The highlighted dates on the calendar in My
2:19Workspace are an aggregate of events from across all of your sites.
2:19The colored highlights on each date represent high, medium, and low priority events occurring
2:19on that day. The events for the selected date are listed
2:19below the calendar. Click a date for a listing of that day's events.
2:19Click an event's title to view event details.
2:19Click the "Back" button to return to the event list.
2:19Use the arrow buttons to advance the calendar by month. Click the "today" button to return
2:19to the current month. Click the "options" button to change the My
2:19Workspace calendar settings. You can select a weekly or monthly view...
2:19...assign a priority to different event types...
2:19...and assign a color to represent the priorities on the calendar.
2:19Click the "Update" button when finished. The announcements section contains the combined
2:19announcements from all sites. Clicking an announcement will display it without
2:19the need to visit that site. Use the arrow buttons to navigate to older
2:19announcements. The message center lists new items in the
2:19messages and forum tools from your active sites.
2:19Clicking the notification will take you to the messages or forums tool in that course.
2:19You can may use the Options button to hide sites from this list.
2:23Note that My Workspace is one of several sites available in the Navigation Menu.
2:28Clicking a tab selects and displays that course or project site. Note that the Tools Menu...
2:37...and Content Area are different for each site.
2:42If you have more than a few sites, you will see the "More Sites" button. Click "More Sites"
2:48to see a complete listing.
2:51Course sites are organized by academic term...
2:53...while project and portfolio sites appear in separate categories...
3:01If you have a large number of sites, you may want to change which are displayed by default
3:05on the navigation menu, and which are available in "More Sites."
3:09Click the Preferences button. From this screen, you can customize the number
3:17of shortcut tabs displayed in the navigation menu...
3:22...and change the order in which they are displayed.
3:34To hide a site from the navigation menu, select it, and click the right-arrow button to move
3:39it to the "hidden sites" list...
3:40...Click the left-arrow button to return it to the "active sites" list.
3:43This is helpful in hiding courses from previous academic terms.
3:48Click the "Update Preferences" button. Sakai will reload with your updated navigation
4:03menu. Hidden sites are no longer available from the Navigation Bar, but they are not
4:08deleted, and can be restored to the Active Sites tab at any time from the Preferences
4:13tool. Note that the My Workspace preferences includes
4:18tabs for additional settings.
4:22You can choose how to be notified when new and updated content is posted to sites...
4:28...Set your local time zone... ...And select the language for Sakai's controls
4:36and system messages. Note that the Tool Menu on the left side of
4:48the screen reflects that we are viewing the Preferences tool...
4:52...for My Workspace. At the moment, the Tool Menu is collapsed.
4:59Click the arrow to toggle the Tool Menu's visibility between maximized...
5:03...and minimized. The list of tools is specific to the selected
5:11site. Moving to a different site...
5:15...displays only the tools installed by that site's owner.
5:21Hovering over a tool in the menu displays a brief description of that tool's function.
5:31You may also jump directly to a tool on another site. Click the arrow next to a site's name
5:37in the Navigation Menu to reveal a jump list with shortcuts to that site's tools.
5:47Remember these important points when navigating Sakai:
5:53Note the blue Help icon located on tools and pages throughout the site. Clicking the Help
6:00icon from a specific tool displays context-sensitive help, relevant to that specific function.
6:08General documentation is also available by clicking the Help button located in the Tool
6:13Menu on most sites. Every tool includes a "Reset" button that
6:21will return the tool to its main screen. This is helpful if you are unsure where you are
6:29located within a tool. Note that clicking the Reset button will cause any unsaved changes
6:34in the tool to be lost. As you move between tools, and even across
6:44sites, you will find that Sakai remembers your previous location when you return to
6:48that tool or site.
6:51If we visit the Syllabus tool of a course site and begin to add content...
6:58...then return to My Workspace to find some information...
7:05...Sakai remembers our location when we return to the course site.
7:16Keep in mind, however, that information already entered in fields will NOT be retained as
7:21you navigate. Sakai only remembers your location. Because Sakai keeps track of your location
7:34in various sites and tools, it is important that you not use your browser's BACK or FORWARD
7:39buttons to navigate. Always use the buttons and navigation from within Sakai.
7:45Sakai should also be used with only one browser window open at a time to prevent data from
7:49being mistakenly overridden when changes are made in one window, but not in another.
7:56Finally, you can see how your course and project sites appear to others using the "View Site
8:03As" menu at the top of the screen.
8:07For example, this course site contains tools and other information visible only to instructors.
8:17When the "Student" role is selected...
8:20...that content is properly hidden.
8:27Be sure to "Exit Student View" when you are ready to make other changes to your site.
8:36Thank you for viewing this screencast. We encourage you to explore other screencasts
8:40and documentation available from this site as you continue exploring the Sakai collaborative
