In exothermic reactions, the reaction of a few particles gives out enough energy to provide the activation energy for the remaining particles. This allows the reaction to keep going. This is the remaining particles between hydrogen and oxygen (discussed on page 36) - when the first hydrogen molecule, the heat given out enables other molecules to react.
