Two Kansas City firefighters were killed and two others were injured late Monday after a burning building collapsed on the city's northeast side.
Fire Department Battalion Chief James Garrett told the Kansas City Star that crews were called to the fire at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time. Fire Chief Paul Berardi told reporters that the building collapse was reported at 8:07 p.m. local time.

"Our hearts absolutely go out to the family," Berardi said, "both to their peers who are grieving, but also their family members who are at the hospital now."
Garrett said the firefighters were clearing an area with a partially collapsed roof when the structure collapsed further. The deceased firefighters were not immediately identified.
WDAF reported that two people were trapped in the burning building, which included apartments, but were later rescued. It is unclear whether they suffered any injuries. The station also reported that one of the injured firefighters would be hospitalized overnight for observation, while the second was expected to be released that night.
"What is good for [the firefighters'] families to remember is that they did not die in vain," Berardi said. "They saved two civilians, carried them out of the second floor on ladders before the wall collapsed."
The Star reported that Monday night's fire appeared to be the deadliest for the department since 1988, when six firefighters were killed in an explosion at a construction site.
Crews were still fighting the fire late Monday. It was not immediately clear how the blaze started.
"I was laying down and heard somebody yell, "Everybody get out,'" resident Lawrence Ray Lee told the Star. "I opened my door and there was smoke really bad."
"This is the worst day," Berardi said. "It’s difficult when you’re with somebody 24 hours a day and laughing and joking and then something like this happens.
