after 6 and 12 months. In a separate publication, psychiatric aspects were evaluated in the same group of patients (47). Minor behavioral, difficulties were apparent among children receiving CBZ and VPA after 1 month of treatment, but not thereafter. A collateral finding was the observation that the mothers of the children with epilepsy displayed unusually higher levels of anxiety and depression 2 months after their child was diagnosed with epilepsy. In another prospective study, Dodrill and Wilensky (48) were able to identify three groups of 11 adults each who remained on the same AED regimen for 5 years: either PHT monotherapy,or PHT and other drugs, or AEDs other than PHT. All patients were considered to have had few seizures during the 5 years. Comparison between baseline and final neuropsychological and intelligence variables revealed few statistically significant changes in mental abilities, and no losses. Thus, no long-term insidious AED related cognitive losses could be demonstrated in these patients
