New challenges and opportunities
for pastoralism

and secure land-use systems, including
protection of pastures from encroachment
and strengthening of local and/or
customary systems so that they are better
able to negotiate dry-season access to key
resources for pastoralists;
• Expansion of trade, integration of markets
and increasing regional interconnectivity,
together with high and growing demand
for animal proteins all over the world;
• Conflict avoidance. Pastoralists’ reliance
on mobility makes them particularly
vulnerable to conflict and fear of conflict,
which can cut off their access to key
