Most of the biomass are hygroscopic in nature and absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Moisture in biomass is fundamentally subdivided into inherent, surface and decompo-sition moisture. Inherent moisture is the moisture a fuel can hold in the capillary openings of the biomass when in equilibrium with the atmosphere. Surface moisture occurs on the surface of the biomass and is in excess of inherent moisture. The moisture content of biomass cited in the literature usually refers to inherent plus surface moisture.
