Non-pharmacological treatment options
A number of non-pharmacological treatment options are
available as intervention options for ADHD. Although they
may offer less control over symptoms, it is important for clinicians
to be aware of and have access to non-pharmacological
options for a number of reasons. Firstly, while questions
regarding their safety and efficacy in very young children
remain, medication is not currently recommended for preschool
children (Daley et al. 2009). In addition, some parents
may feel uncomfortable or have ethical concerns about modifying
their child’s behaviour with drug treatment. Finally,
adverse side-effects may prevent their use. Behavioural parenting
interventions, social skills training and cognitive behavioural
therapy are recommended as treatment options in the
UK (NICE 2008).
