Dark Earths
Called "terra preta de Indio" (dark Indian earth), small areas of nutrient-rich soils are scattered amid the humid lowland portion of Brazil's Amazon Basin. Formed from centuries of human development (anthropogenic), these embedded plots of soil dot the infertile landscape and rarely measure larger than 80 square feet.
